Meet Alex Defever!

Alexandra shares the receptionist role with her mother, Rose, at the Grand Rapids location. Her favorite quote is, “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” by Robin Williams.

What job did you do previously? What led you to the commercial real estate industry?

“Previously, I taught first grade. It was all I had known for 7 years at the time and teaching was all-encompassing for me in the best way possible. I loved the relationships I built with my students and watching little minds grow, but I decided to take a one-year leave from teaching after having Aria. Ultimately, when that year ended, I decided I needed a change of pace from teaching, and my mom introduced the idea of working at NAI. I am so thankful I was led here, as it has been the biggest blessing for finding a work-life balance. Though I am not directly in the trenches of working in the commercial real estate industry, I have gained knowledge about the industry in the last couple of years!”

How did you decide to work as the Receptionist?

“Honestly, I was looking to work part-time and after Rose introduced the idea of me working in tandem with her as the receptionist, as well as informing me of how much she enjoyed what she does at NAI, I decided to give it a try! I enjoy meeting and greeting new faces in our office and am happy to help around our office as I can.”

What do you like most about working with NAI?

“I like the work culture best, as well as learning about the industry, which is still fairly new to me. We have constant interaction, room for growth, and a buzz around the office. You also feel cared for as an employee and person. The company and staff have been warm and welcoming to me over the past 3 years.”

What’s your most memorable or proudest work moment?

“I really like to do the event planning for us, especially for our company outings. Planning and executing the outings allows for everyone to gather in a setting outside of work to really get to know what is at the heart of who people are. Creating a culture of camaraderie outside of work, as well as in the workplace is so important.”

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

“In my free time, I love to spend time with my husband, daughter, and family. I love to drink and try new coffee, contrary to my everyday Starbucks at work – I think that has come with being a parent. I also love shopping, traveling, and reading a good book when I can.”
